Cinema Her Way: Unboxing and Interview Subject Reveal

After a ten year journey, I'm an author!

I first announced my viewing project A Year With Women on December 17th, 2014. I spent the entire year of 2015 only watching films directed by women. It was an enlightening year and changed my viewing habits — and my life — forever. Afterwards I’d been mulling over how to turn my knowledge into a resource that would be helpful for others as well. In 2021 I launched both my Weekly Directed By Women Viewing Guide and my Female Filmmakers In Focus interview column. Later that year during the Toronto International Film Festival, I was approached by lit agent Nicki Richesin, who asked if I had a book idea. Readers, I did.

Several years, many film viewings, nineteen interviews, and many edits later my book Cinema Her Way: Visionary Female Directors In Their Own Words was born! And almost ten years to the day from when I first announced I was embarking on A Year With Women, my author copy arrived in the mail. Readers, I am an author!

A few months ago I revealed the cover of the book, but now I am excited to share the names of the nineteen women who sat down for career-spanning interviews with me.

I am so proud of this book, which along with my interviews, features vibrant film stills, as well as filmmaker illustrations by artist, projectionist, and film curator Alex Kittle. The book was designed by the brilliant Kayleigh Jankowski, who made it look exactly how I imaged it in my head.
